a splash of coffee

Life’s elixir, though at times overlooked as a mundane part of the everyday, can provide a source of inspiration and meditation. From the rich colour and flavour of the bean, the aroma of a brewing blend to wake us from slumber, to the captivating splash and steam as we pour a cup for ourselves or those we love. It may be the only true act of indulgence we allow ourselves in a day, a gift we share with another over a hard conversation, or simply a break and recharge amongst the bustle of life.

While I enjoyed my daily black coffee I became transfixed with the idea of capturing and recreating the movement of poured coffee using a typically rigid material. The piece is hand-forged from a Corten steel plate into the shape of a coffee cup. Each individual droplet has been welded and ground and textured with rusty steel wool. A very specific style of coffee pot was then sourced to ensure the ‘pouring’ was visible when viewing the piece to add to the feeling of moving liquid.

‘A Splash of Coffee’ is part of a wider ‘Metal in Motion’ series.
